Our Black Dirt Soil We currently lease 5 acres of land from the Chester Ag Center in Chester, NY. We are on precious "black dirt" soil, land that contains far more nutrients and organic matter that help us grow a wide variety of crops. Our fields are also part of a conservation effort that involves converting land that had been farmed conventionally in the past into organically farmed land. All farmers in our community must commit to using organic practices and therefore we don't have to worry about what our neighbors are spraying. We only plant about half of our land with edible crops every year, and the rest is cover cropped to improve fertility and lower the populations of insects that damage our crops. |
What's Unique About Our Farm We focus on heirloom varieties that maximize flavor rather than just looking at what varieties produce the most yield
We grow food that is clean and free of chemicals We practice regenerative agriculture, cover cropping our land and rotating our crops to invest in the health of our soil We offer a safe space on our farm to all people from any race, ethnic group, or sexual orientation and we hope to find others to work for us who want to share that space We want to support and teach anyone who wants to pursue farming or homesteading as a career |
